How high will gas prices go before we start drilling for our own oil?

We do drill for our own oil. The thing is, the easy oil was tapped out a long time ago, so prices have to get pretty high before it's worth it to run an well in the US. As prices go up, though, pumps are brought on-line.

America doesn't have huge reserves, though, and there are some that argue that it makes strategic sense to tap those reserves only when imports are unavailable. How high will gas prices go before we start drilling for our own oil?
We don't need to drill for oil! In fact we don't even need to use gasoline anymore.

Its simple.

Setup 4 large solar power plants that do nothing but put their output into hydrogen production.

Update software in vehicles that have computers, change their timing and change the fuel injectors. Add a tank for hydrogen and the new fuel lines and bang. Now you have a functioning hydrogen car.

For older cars you can remove the carb and intake and add a mechanical injector system. Add a tank for hydrogen and the new fuel lines. Change the timing and bang, hydrogen powered older model car or truck.

Its not rocket science, and we could make the switch tomorrow if we really wanted to.

Oh and my favorite are the people that scream about hydrogen being explosive. Well gasoline is explosive as well and in a reck its even more dangerous than hydrogen. How high will gas prices go before we start drilling for our own oil?
not so much drilling as it is using

Who knows, but not until at least we get a different president
We already drill our own oil. Look at the outputs of Montana, Wyoming, Oklahoma, Texas, and Alaska just to name a few. I think the real answer is coming with ethanol. I really see oportunity for growth here. We still pay a lot of farmers NOT to grow crops, because there is a surplus. If more of us demanded ethanol, it would be cheaper, farmers with empty fields would be growing, and our dependancy on oil would be significantly cut. As for Dedee's answer, it's not just the president, but congress too!!
