Why is drilling for oil in the arctic a bad idea?

I have not heard of any nightmare stories from the alaska pipeline(I've heard that the caribou population has incresed in alaska).....

and drilling for oil is a bad idea, but watching ice road truckers last year shows the diamond industry blowing up cubic miles of arctic tundra for diamonds, that would seem a little more damage to the perma frost....oops what perma frost ?its gone....Why is drilling for oil in the arctic a bad idea?
Because it uses up US oil reserves when all that will do is put money in the pockets of a few.

I think we need to hold it in reserve until we get desperate. And, given our lack of planning for very expensive oil, we'll get there.

So don't worry that we won't drill it. We will, it's just a matter of when. Why is drilling for oil in the arctic a bad idea?
It's not and should be done.
OIL IS NOT THE PROBLEM!!! It's lack of refineries.

Ever notice that you're gas doesn't really go up and down with the price of oil? But look at when there are bad storms or fires or something else that affects the flow of oil. Then prices go up.

We haven't built a new refinery in about 20 years and now they are all operating at almost full capacity to make gas. So if one has to shut down, BAM, lower gas supply, higher prices. The gas companies say it costs 10 billion to build a new one so they don't want to because we're all ';going green'; and it wouldn't be profitable. This from the companies that make BILLIONS every month.....
The Gwich'in indian tribe are native decendants in the ANWR area. They believe that oil drilling would be a desecration of where the caribou migrate. They call it, ';where life began.';

The indian tribe has objected to drilling in ANWR for years. Considering our history of how we have handled native americans, shouldn't we leave this native american tribe's land alone?
antarctica is the only peice of environment left unharmed by man and still may contain evidenceon the theory of evolution of life

if we go ahead and take advantage of its natural environment,we will ruin all chances of ever finding the roots of life
because firstly the artic doesnt belong to any one country and if governments are still looking for fossil fuels,it proves they have no intention of taking global warming seriously, all efdforts should be focused on renewable power, that doesnt entail carbon emissions
It is not a bad idea Jared
It's bad for the environment.....

That's why they won't drill off the coast of California or Florida either.
Well, there are good and bad stories out there for any oil industry work... The ANWR reserves are a hot-button topic. As Bob said here, we can wait until we're desperate to tap them, which will require a 5-10 year lead-in before any returns on investment.

Now is an excellent time to begin, because the oil market is volatile, and the extraction of oil from the refuge will have to be carefully planned to maximize benefits and minimize harmful impact.

Like it or not, most of America is more interested in being able to pay for gas or heating oil next week, as opposed to 10 years from now. Waiting is a luxury that has a cost associated with it, as is beginning the planning process now, while oil (and thus labor and ancillary expenses) is still relatively cheap.

There's going to be a guessing game involved as to when it will become profitable enough to invest in construction up there, vs. a declining benefit from one-time cost escalation from inflation over time (due partly to oil prices at the time of first construction).
Because that would help the U.S. and to libs that would be a terrible thing.
