Why has everyone stopped talking about drilling for oil off of the US coast?

WE NEED TO DRILL! NOW!Why has everyone stopped talking about drilling for oil off of the US coast?
A. The price of oil has dropped, (for now)

B. The banking crisis has put oil on the back burner

C. The attention of the majority of the American people is not that great.

D. We SHOULD be drilling, but also looking for alternatives. This does not have to be an either or type deal. We should do both. Why has everyone stopped talking about drilling for oil off of the US coast?
the oil companies sell us oil drilled in America for the OPEC price.

if we let them drill more, they will just make more money.

if they found an oil reserve twice the size of all the oil reserves in the world, combined, if that would make the US able to control the price of oil, if the oil could be sold , retail for $.10 a gallon and the oil companies would make millions in profit, they would still sell it to us for the OPEC price, because they want billions, not millions.

why should we make them richer?
when will people find a viable replacement for Oil?

Not stalling tactics by off-setting CO emissions with 3rd world countries %26amp; stop tearing down rainforests ( the planets lungs ) to grow Bio-fuels ( which do JUST as much damage as burning fossils fuels )

The world has got to move on from stripping Mother Earth of all her resources.

The Oil that the world so greatly desires was there for a reason.

Leave what's left %26amp; find an alternative.

Don't you think the situation on Wall Street has overshadowed that right now. Besides I'm not so convinced that a significant increase in drilling now would have any short term impact on the price at the pump; it could take a number of yrs. for that to occur and then there are far too many volatile situations across the globe for us to be concerned about. Our Peace can be jeopardized in the blink of an eye.
Why do we need to drill? How about if we demand alternate forms of energy and fuel before allowing the oil companies to rape our coastlines? I don't trust them to do it right nor am I naive enough to believe that, even if they found oil, they would lower their prices.
Perhaps because of the sorry state of our economy there is no money to borrow for drilling. Drilling for oil is not like drilling into a piece of wood considering labor and material plus bureaucracy.
